Getting Ready for University

Did I mention that Dunelm Mill is the Devil's Market Place? It over takes that other Den of Iniquity called Ikea, especially since it's only 15 minutes drive away. When I moved from the house to The Flat, I got rid of a lot of Stuff. And then, I bought a whole load more. Things I didn't know I needed until I saw it and once I brought them home with me, I spent hours wondering how on earth I lived without them.

It's not all silliness. I needed things like lamp shades, blankies, lunch boxes. The little things that have all added up. And mostly things that go with purple. Because I've got a thing with purple decor going on. No, before you ask, I don't know why. I just do. No one else knows why either. Boy has given up and just gives me a look. Dave, well Dave has a thing about lime green, so he has no room to talk.

Things like this:

Practical and stylish

That folding step ladies and gentlemen is amazing. As you know, I am a short arse. Therefore, being able to get up those 4 inches higher, is ridiculously useful. And look! It folds flat, thus being practical and space saving.

Isn't it marvellous?

So, when Boy needed a few things for his room and for university, of course that's where we had to go.

Before we started the move, I sorted through quite a lot of kitchen stuff for Boy. I was lucky that we had an extra crockery set and I kept our old cutlery exactly for this circumstance.  I'd also bought bedding and a new duvet for him a couple of weeks ago. When we went over to Dunelm this afternoon, I knew we wanted 3 pans, a wok and a mattress protector.

No, I have no idea what happened. I do know Boy was very gracious in that he agreed he'd take some of the old stuff in the kitchen and let me have new purple stuff. Yes, I really did need that purple grater. And the tongs. And the strainer. And the whisk. But I drew the line at the purple can opener, because that would be just silly.

We also got him folding chair and a collapsable laundry basket. He wanted them both in black, like his soul.

Dear Gods I'm going to miss him.

  1. I've got a little folding step, but I'm afraid mine is a white cheapie from the Factory Shop. But then I can hide it away when not in use - which reminds me, I must put it in the car for Monday...wonder where I left it.

I've still got a couple of your blankies in my car which I keep forgetting to give to you. As well as several bags.

    1. Actually, your stool was my inspiration (and it wasn't that expensive either - £4.99). It was so handy you were really lucky to get it back.

You have bags? I'd forgotten the blankies completely! Umm....damn, I suppose we'd better arrange a luncheon in order to arrange a hand over.

  2. I too have a fold-away step thing, although mine is more substantial, has 2 steps and consequently doesn't fold away nearly as neatly as yours. I need the top step to reach the top shelves of my kitchen cupboards and sometimes I take it outside when I wash my car because I'm too short to reach all of the roof.

I've got a purple theme going on in my bedroom. Apparently, purple is very trendy. Who knew? The stuff in my kitchen deliberately doesn't match but I do have a purple bread bin and a purple spatula. I know what you mean about Dunelm. My purple bedside lamps came from there, as did some wall art for the conservatory that I don't think was on the shopping list.

    1. In the kitchen in the house, the muppets who designed the kitchen put the wall cupboards up so high I couldn't reach the top shelf. I really could have used the folding step there.

I'm happy now Dave put these cupboards at the perfect height for me.

Purple's trendy? Really. Cool. I'm glad you said that. It's probably the first time in my life I've ever been on trend.

      My work here is done.

  3. I have a purple hand-held mixer. That is because only certain "select" colors were on sale at the time.

I like your handy step stool. I have a three-foot folding ladder so I can reach things on the 10-foot ceilings.

    1. I have a list of Things to Do Eventually that includes getting the loft sorted. I will require a folding loft ladder to squeeze into that space. Otherwise I'm never going to be able to stash things up there!

A purple hand held mixer? I'm so jealous.

  4. I have tried to comment so many times, but it never seems to work!

I am going to be a mess when my son has gone. The finance forms were just as bad as you said they were, just dreadful. Tomorrow is the day, we are hitting Wilkinson's and luckily he hasn't mentioned a wok. I have three weeks of his company left. We took him to Winterton on Friday because we were all getting a bit stressed, and swam and built sandcastles and I took photos of my son just being a boy.

    1. Hello darling! Glad you've made it on here.

Yes, it is all getting a bit stressful. Perhaps a beach day is what he needs. Good idea.

Actually, thinking about it. I don't think we got a wok in the end. Damn it.

  5. Wow, it finally worked. I have been trying to comment ever since Z's bloggy party.

I have always loved purple. The males aren't keen, but I manage to sneak in the odd bit and even OH likes the large purple silicone slice/spatula I found. Son's room is very small, not sure what sort of laundry basket to go for. He would never bother with a hanging bag, I do know that for a fact.

    1. Someone unkindly pointed out the Jenny Jones poem to me. I had to hit them with the purple bin!

Boy is the tidy one in our household. If you looked at our respective bedrooms, you'd be surprised by the difference. If only that applied to the rest of the house....
